Sisters of Course
WE’RE GRACE & JAEMA. We live 800 miles apart, and we’ve been connecting, kitchen-to-kitchen, over cooking and baking. Jaema lives in New York and favors vegetables, herbs and spices, and breakfast all day. Her peak cooking experience was learning to make pasta in Bologna, Italy. Grace lives in Chicago, and favors visually-striking food, classic flavor pairings with a modern twist, and indulgent desserts. Her peak cooking experience was studying abroad in Paris, France, and learning to make traditional macarons.
In 2020, our cooking adventures stayed much closer to home, and cooking and baking continued to be a way to stay connected, with a deeper sense of ritual — in the controllable, predictable science of flour and yeast, and in the improvisation and spontaneity of cooking with whatever is in peak season.
In this book we’re sharing some of our favorite dishes, arranged by course. If you’re in the mood for something simple and healthy, you can find it here. If you’re ready to settle in for an elaborate and indulgent project, you can find that here too. What ties the recipes together? We made them in 2020, and we like them. Our tastes, despite the distance, despite our different styles, run similar. Because we’re sisters, of course.
Grace’s Role in the Project.
In a collaboration with her sister, Grace created a custom cookbook showcasing all of their culinary accomplishments from the year 2020. Both contributors included recipes and photography taken in the respective homes. Once cookbook production began, the visual designing was exclusively Grace’s, utilizing Jaema’s eyes primarily for feedback and copy editing.
The Logo.
Grace chose to develop a logo to use not only in this print publication, but also to have for future design applications of cooking collaboration. Each logo option had a focus on food or kitchen items, but in the end the sisters decided that the use of measurements from a butter stick wrapper seemed the most fun.
The selected logo is above, however view the alternate logo ideas initially presented in the rotating images below.
Cover Design Options.
To help make the logo decision, a number were used and applied to cover design options. View some options below to see what was considered but eventually rejected. Each cover design features photos of recipes that were complete by the sisters when together.
